Here are some of my favourite Science 10 lesson plans!

  1. Balancing Chemical Equations Assessment SCI 10 – LP 3

This lesson plan involved the assessment of balancing chemical reactions. However, instead of the usual worksheet or test paper that had skeleton equations for students to balance, my students used whiteboards and markers to show their balancing while at the same using manipulatives (in this case, coloured beads) to represent the balanced particles in the reaction as well. By using manipulatives, students can demonstrate their learning visually as well. This idea inspired me to think more creatively about assessments and what I wish for students to take away from lessons!

2. Hand Warmer Lab SCI 10 – LP 8

This lab was so cool – students were given materials and resources, but they developed their own procedures and research questions! Of course, at this stage, the research question couldn’t be something incredible, but students were still given more opportunity to use what they learned from previous activities and background knowledge to apply everything they learned into this lab. It was a lot of fun to read their conclusions!

These were the lab handouts that I used!

As a teacher-in-training, these ideas were vastly new to me, and still rough around the edges, but I would love to work on developing these lesson ideas further in the future!
